Wellesley Islands

SuburbBrisbane, Queensland

Wellesley Islands is a SUB AREA in Brisbane, Queensland.

The Wellesley Islands, anchored by Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, offer a raw and remote Australian escape. This tropical archipelago, home to the Lardil and Kaiadilt peoples, is a place where turquoise waters lap white sandy beaches and ancient culture is alive. With a tiny population of just over a thousand, the islands are far from mass tourism. Visitors can explore pristine mangroves, fish for barramundi, or simply soak in the stillness of a land that time forgot. The main settlement, Gununa, provides basic services, but beyond lies a world of stunning isolation. Snorkeling and birdwatching reward those who venture out, while learning about local traditions and art adds deep meaning. However, infrastructure is sparse; accommodation is limited and advance planning essential. The dry season from May to October offers the best climate, with sunny days and minimal humidity. The Wellesley Islands are not for the casual traveller — they are for the intrepid soul seeking genuine wilderness and cultural connection.

Best time to visit Wellesley Islands

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months, temperatures are milder (22-30°C), humidity is low, and the risk of rain and cyclones is minimal. This is perfect for outdoor activities, fishing, and exploring the islands. The wet season (November to April) brings oppressive heat, heavy rainfall, and potential cyclone threats, making travel difficult and many services limited or closed.

Getting around

"Getting around the islands is limited. The main settlement Gununa is walkable. For exploring further, 4WD hire is available on Mornington Island (book in advance). Dinghies and small boats can be chartered for island hopping – ask at the Gununa store or local council. There are no rental cars on outer islands. A small airstrip connects Mornington Island to Mount Isa via Skytrans flights. Barge services from Karumba on the mainland bring supplies. Walking is the primary mode on smaller islands."

"The Wellesley Islands are generally safe with low crime, but isolation is the biggest risk. Always inform someone of your itinerary. The sun is intense – use high SPF sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Crocodiles are present in coastal areas and mangroves; never swim in rivers or at muddy banks. Marine stingers (box jellyfish) are common from October to May; wear stinger suits. Swim only at patrolled beaches if available. Respect private property and sacred sites. Carry ample water and a first aid kit. Mobile phone coverage is patchy; satellite phones are advisable for remote trips."

Entry and health

Health information

"Medical facilities are extremely basic on Mornington Island (a small clinic). Serious cases must be evacuated to Mount Isa or Cairns, which can take hours. Travelers should bring a comprehensive first aid kit, any required prescription medications, and consider travel insurance with evacuation coverage. Avoid tap water; rely on bottled or boiled water. Tetanus and hepatitis A vaccinations are recommended. Be aware of tropical diseases like dengue and Ross River virus – use repellent and wear long sleeves. There are no hospitals on the outer islands."

Culture

Local customs

"The Wellesley Islands are home to strong Indigenous communities with rich traditions. Always ask permission before taking photos of people or entering communities. Dress modestly in villages – avoid swimwear when not at the beach. Elders are highly respected; greet them first. It is customary to remove shoes when entering some homes. Do not touch or take anything from sacred sites. Learn a few words of Lardil or Kaiadilt if possible – it's appreciated. Be prepared for a slower pace: services might close early or be unavailable without notice. Respect local fishing and collecting rules – permits may be needed."
