SuburbBrisbane, Queensland

Point Lookout is a SUB AREA in Brisbane, Queensland.

Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is a serene coastal escape just a short ferry ride from Brisbane. This tiny township (pop. ~983) offers dazzling beaches, world-class surf breaks, and an unhurried pace. Start your day at Cylinder Beach, a gentle family-friendly stretch, then tackle the North Gorge Walk for breathtaking ocean views, dolphin and sea turtle spotting, and seasonal whale watching (June–November). The Gorge is also a top sunrise photography spot. Grab fish and chips at the Point Lookout Pub or fresh seafood at the local café. Afternoon kayaking in the calm bay or a sunset stroll along Frenchman’s Beach reveals the island’s wild beauty. As night falls, the starry sky is uninterrupted by city lights. Point Lookout is a haven for nature lovers – you’ll find walking trails through coastal heath and eucalypt forests where wallabies and goannas roam. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming, with a strong Indigenous (Quandamooka) heritage. Water activities include surfing, paddleboarding, and snorkelling (stinger suits recommended in summer). Limited shops – stock up in Brisbane or on the mainland before ferrying over. This is the perfect digital detox spot with decent mobile coverage but limited Wi-Fi.

Getting around

"The only way to reach Point Lookout is by passenger ferry from Cleveland (Brisbane) to Dunwich (50 min), then a 30-minute bus ride across the island. Once there, walking is best for the village core; bicycles can be hired. A rental car is very limited (book well in advance) and necessary to explore other parts of the island. The island has a local bus service ($$) but infrequent. Taxis are scarce – pre-book. No rideshare services."

"Point Lookout is a very safe, small community with low crime. Lock your rental car and don't leave valuables on the beach. Ocean swimming can be dangerous – always swim at patrolled beaches (Cylinder Beach) between the flags. Rip currents are common. Stay on marked walking trails, especially around the gorge cliff edges. At night, streets are poorly lit; carry a torch. Wildlife like goannas and kangaroos are generally harmless, but don't feed them. Bushfires can occur in summer – follow local advisories."

Entry and health

Health information

"Point Lookout has a small medical centre (open Mon-Fri) and a pharmacy, but no hospital. For serious issues, you'll need to travel back to the mainland – the ferry to Brisbane takes about 50 minutes. Carry a basic first aid kit, seasickness remedy for the ferry, and be aware of marine stingers (box jellyfish) from November to May – wear a stinger suit. Bushfire hazard in summer; stay informed. Always carry water and sun protection (high UV year-round)."

Culture

Local customs

"Point Lookout is part of Quandamooka Country – respect Indigenous heritage and avoid climbing sacred sites. Dress is casual; swimwear is fine at the beach but cover up in shops and cafes. Tipping is not customary but appreciated for good service. Littering is heavily frowned upon (take rubbish with you). The atmosphere is relaxed; greet locals with a smile. Ferry timetables are punctual – arrive early. Quiet hours in holiday parks: 10 pm–7 am."
