Getting around

"From Townsville, take the SeaLink ferry (20 min) to Nelly Bay terminal. Once on the island, the local bus service runs hourly along the main road connecting all bays (single fare ~A$2). Hiring a Mini Moke, scooter, or golf buggy is popular and fun – book ahead in peak season. Bicycles are available but hilly terrain makes them challenging. Walking is pleasant for short distances. Taxis are limited; pre-book for late returns. Car rental on the island is available but only 4WDs on some unsealed roads. Note: no ride-sharing services."

Scam risk

6/10

"Nelly Bay is very safe with low crime, though petty theft from unlocked vehicles can occur – lock your rental car and secure valuables. Part of Nelly Bay has a reticulated ‘magnet’ that can attract sharks? Actually no major issue. The main safety concerns are natural: strong sun, heat, and rip currents at unpatrolled beaches – swim only at patrolled areas. Hiking trails can be steep and hot; carry water and let someone know your plans. Wildlife encounters (koalas, wallabies) are safe, but do not feed them. At night, stick to well-lit paths along the esplanade."

Entry and health

Health information

"Australia has excellent healthcare, but Nelly Bay has only a small medical clinic; serious cases require transfer to Townsville. Ensure travel insurance covers helicopter evacuation. The tropical sun is intense – use high-SPF sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. Stinger suits (available for rent) are strongly recommended from November to May due to marine stingers (jellyfish). Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Mosquito-borne illnesses (e.g., Ross River virus) are rare but possible; use repellent at dusk. Ticks are present in bushland; check yourself after hikes."

Culture

Local customs

"Australians are friendly and informal. Greet with a smile and a ‘G’day’. Casual dress (board shorts, t-shirts, thongs/flip-flops) is fine everywhere except upscale dining. Tipping is not required, but appreciated for excellent service (10%). Always respect Indigenous heritage – do not touch rock art and follow signage in national parks. Beach etiquette: keep noise down, obey beach flags, and take rubbish with you. Public drinking is restricted; use designated areas. When hiking, stay on marked trails to protect the fragile ecosystem."
