Pink Lake

SuburbPerth, Western Australia

Pink Lake is a SUB AREA in Perth, Western Australia.

Pink Lake, a tiny settlement of just 890 souls, is the gateway to one of Australia's most surreal natural wonders—the bubblegum-pink saline lake that gives the town its name. Nestled along the rugged southern coastline, this off-the-beaten-path gem offers a starkly beautiful landscape of white salt crusts, wildflowers in spring, and endless horizons. Visitors come primarily to witness the lake's changing hues, best seen at sunrise when the water glows like a strawberry milkshake against the deep blue sky. Beyond the lake, the region offers coastal walks, birdwatching (including rare black swans), and starlit camping. The town itself is a quiet, friendly community with a general store, a pub, and a handful of self-catering cottages. It's the perfect escape for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking solitude. Summers are hot and dry, winters cool and crisp. Because facilities are limited, travellers need to be self-sufficient. The locals are warm and welcoming, but English is the only language spoken. Pink Lake is a place where nature takes centre stage, and human presence is just a whisper.

Best time to visit Pink Lake

September to November (spring) or March to May (autumn) for mild temperatures (20-28°C) and lower flies. The lake is most vividly pink in late summer and autumn (January-April) when evaporation concentrates the algae and bacteria that cause the colour. Winter (June-August) can be cool and windy but offers fewer crowds and unique storm light.

"Pink Lake is extremely safe; crime is virtually non-existent. Main hazards are environmental: extreme heat in summer, dehydration, and sunburn. The lake's salt crust can be sharp—wear sturdy footwear. Do not drink the lake water; it's hypersaline. Wildlife includes snakes (brown snakes, tiger snakes) and spiders; watch where you step. If driving, be cautious on unsealed roads, especially after rain. Carry extra fuel and water as services are sparse."

Health information

"No hospital in Pink Lake; nearest medical clinic is in Esperance (60 km). For serious emergencies, Royal Flying Doctor Service may be activated. Carry a comprehensive first-aid kit, insect repellent (for flies and mosquitoes), and sun protection. Tap water is not potable—bring bottled or treat water. Pharmacies in Esperance stock basic medications; prescriptions should be arranged beforehand."
