Lake Clifton

SuburbPerth, Western Australia

Lake Clifton is a SUB AREA in Perth, Western Australia.

Lake Clifton is a serene hamlet on the shores of the Peel-Harvey Estuary, about 100 km south of Perth. This tiny community is best known for its thrombolites – ancient, living rock-like structures found in the hypersaline lake – which are among the oldest life forms on Earth. The surrounding Yalgorup National Park offers peaceful walking trails, birdwatching, and kayaking through calm waters. Anglers come for blue swimmer crabs, herring, and whiting. The lake itself is a Ramsar wetland, home to thousands of waterbirds. The nearby white-sand beaches of the Indian Ocean are uncrowded and perfect for a quiet day. Don't expect nightlife; the main draws are raw nature, stunning sunsets, and absolute stillness. A short drive takes you to Mandurah for supplies or the Pinjarra wine region. Stay in a beachside holiday home or pitch a tent at a nearby caravan park. Lake Clifton rewards those seeking solitude and a genuine connection with Western Australia's coastal wilderness.

Best time to visit Lake Clifton

Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer the most pleasant weather – mild days, low humidity, and fewer flies. Wildflowers bloom in spring, making walks exceptional. Summer (December–February) is hot (28–34°C) and dry, ideal for swimming and boating but with higher UV and potential heatwaves. Winter (June–August) is cooler (8–15°C) and wetter, but the landscape is green and the lake can be dramatic; few tourists visit then.

Getting around

"A car is essential. The nearest public transport stop is in Mandurah, 25 km north. From there, Transwa buses run to Mandurah station (Perth rail line). No local taxis or ride-shares exist. Bicycles are feasible on quiet roads but not on the highway. The lake and walks are accessed via unsealed tracks – a 2WD is fine in dry weather. Parking is free at most trailheads. Fuel is available at the Lake Clifton general store (limited hours); better to fill up in Mandurah."

"Lake Clifton is extremely safe with very low crime rates. Exercise usual precautions: lock your vehicle and accommodation, don't leave valuables visible. The main risks are environmental – strong sun, dehydration, and sudden weather changes. If hiking or kayaking alone, inform someone of your plans. Be aware of tides if fishing from rocks. Mobile reception can be patchy on the lake's far side. Roadkill on the highway at night is a hazard – drive slowly. Australia's venomous snakes and spiders exist but are rarely encountered; shake out shoes and bedding if camping."

In summer, carry plenty of water and protect against sun and heatstroke. Mosquitoes can be present near the lake at dawn/dusk – use repellent. Alcohol consumption is not permitted in public areas (parks, beaches) unless specifically allowed. Smoking is banned inside buildings and near playgrounds.
