Best time to visit Copán Department

The dry season from November to April offers ideal conditions for exploring ruins and hiking with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. December–January and Holy Week (Easter) are peak periods with higher prices and larger crowds. May–June and September–October are green and lush, with afternoon showers that rarely disrupt full-day plans. The rainiest months (July–August) can make rural roads muddy but reward with low visitor numbers and vibrant landscapes. For a balance of good weather and moderate crowds, late November or early February is perfect.

Getting around

"Copán Ruinas town is compact and easily explored on foot. For trips to the ruins (1km away), tuk-tuks and taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. Local buses and shared minivans connect to Santa Rosa de Copán, the Guatemalan border, and San Pedro Sula. Mototaxis are a quick, cheap way to get around town. Car rentals are available in San Pedro Sula but not necessary for exploring the immediate area. Roads within the department are sometimes rough, and a 4x4 may be needed during the rainy season for remote areas. Walking remains the best way to soak up the colonial atmosphere."

"Copán is one of the safest areas in Honduras for tourists, with a visible tourist police presence. Petty theft, such as pickpocketing, can occur in crowded markets or on buses; keep valuables secure. Avoid walking alone on unlit streets at night and use authorized taxis after dark. The main archaeological park is well-patrolled and safe during opening hours. Border crossings to Guatemala are busy but generally safe; travel during daylight and use official crossing points. Exercise normal precautions and be aware of your surroundings."

Entry and health

Health information

"No vaccinations are legally required, but hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are recommended. Malaria risk in the Copán region is low, but mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya exist; use repellent and sleep under nets. Drink only bottled or treated water. Medical facilities in Copán Ruinas are basic; for serious emergencies, evacuation to San Pedro Sula is necessary. Carry a comprehensive travel insurance covering evacuation. Avoid street food if hygiene standards appear questionable, and ensure routine vaccines are up to date."

Culture

Local customs

"Dress modestly, especially when visiting churches or indigenous villages; shoulders and knees covered are appreciated. Ask permission before photographing people, particularly in rural communities, and offering a small tip is polite. A friendly ‘buenos días’ goes a long way; Spanish is essential, as English is not widely spoken. Tipping 10% is customary in restaurants if service charge isn't included. Bargaining in markets is fine but do so respectfully. Avoid discussing politics or criticizing local customs. Respect Maya heritage sites by not climbing on fragile structures."
