Îles du Vent

French Polynesia, Oceania

Îles du Vent is a STATE in French Polynesia, Oceania.

The Îles du Vent, or Windward Islands, are the beating heart of French Polynesia, anchored by the legendary Tahiti and the impossibly lush jewel of Moorea. Picture iconic overwater bungalows hovering above crystalline lagoons that shimmer in fifty shades of blue, backdropped by jagged volcanic peaks cloaked in emerald velvet. By day, snorkel with rays and reef sharks in Moorea's calm passes, surf the famous break at Teahupo'o, or hike to hidden waterfalls deep in Tahiti's interior. Black-sand beaches give way to vibrant local markets in Papeete, where the scent of monoi oil and fresh poisson cru fills the air. Come evening, the hypnotic rhythms of Polynesian drumming invite you into a world of fire dancers and heartfelt hospitality. Beyond the main islands, tiny motus ringed with blinding white sand offer total seclusion. Few places on earth marry raw tropical drama with such effortless luxury and genuine Polynesian warmth. Whether you're celebrating romance or chasing adrenaline, the Îles du Vent deliver an intoxicating dose of South Seas magic that stays with you long after you've sailed away.

Best time to visit Îles du Vent

The dry season (May–October) is the prime time, with less humidity, pleasant temperatures around 24–29°C, and brilliant sunny days perfect for hiking and lagoon excursions. July is particularly festive with the Heiva cultural celebrations. Whale-watching peaks August–October. The wetter season (November–April) brings higher humidity, occasional heavy downpours, and warmer 28–34°C heat—still beautiful and less crowded, with lush landscapes. Cyclones are rare but possible January–March.

Getting around

"Rental cars and scooters are the most flexible way to explore, especially on Tahiti and Moorea; book in advance. Tahiti's 'le truck' (public bus) is cheap but runs on a loose schedule—great for short hops. Passenger ferries (Aremiti and Terevau) connect Papeete to Moorea in 30–45 minutes. Domestic flights via Air Tahiti link Moorea and other islands. Taxis are expensive and best booked by phone; Uber does not operate. On Moorea, bicycles and e-bikes are popular for coastal rides. An international driving permit is recommended."

Scam risk

5/10

"The Îles du Vent are generally very safe, with low violent crime. Petty theft can occur, so don't leave valuables on the beach or in unlocked cars. Watch for strong lagoon currents and sharp coral when swimming; always heed local advice and flag warnings. Road conditions are good but mountain roads are narrow and winding—drive cautiously, especially at night, and expect scooters. Swim only in designated areas to avoid stonefish, which hide in shallow waters. Sun exposure and dehydration are real risks; carry water and seek shade. Theft from rental cars at isolated surf spots does happen, so travel light. Emergency services are reliable on Tahiti but response times can be slower on Moorea."

Entry and health

Health information

"No special vaccinations are required for French Polynesia, but routine vaccines (tetanus, hepatitis A) should be up to date. Mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue, Zika, and chikungunya exist, so use DEET-based repellent, wear coverage at dusk/dawn, and choose screened accommodation. Tap water is safe in Papeete but bottled water is recommended elsewhere. Intense tropical sun demands high-SPF, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and rash guard. Medical facilities are good on Tahiti (clinics and the main hospital), but on Moorea options are limited; comprehensive travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential. Bring any personal medications, as pharmacies may not stock familiar brands. Coral cuts can easily become infected, so clean and disinfect promptly. Stray dogs are common but usually harmless—avoid petting them."

Culture

Local customs

"Polynesian culture is relaxed yet deeply proud. Greet with a warm 'Ia ora na' (hello) and a smile; 'Māuruuru' means thank you. Dress modestly when leaving the beach—cover swimsuits in villages and shops. Remove shoes before entering homes and some guesthouses. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional service. Sunday is a family and church day; many businesses close. Respect 'tapu' (sacred) sites like marae (ancient temples). Tattoos hold profound cultural significance, so compliment but don't touch. Alcohol is widely available, but public drunkenness is frowned upon. Ask permission before photographing locals."
