The Narrows

SuburbDarwin, Northern Territory

The Narrows is a SUB AREA in Darwin, Northern Territory.

The Narrows is a tiny, remote settlement in Australia's Northern Territory, perched on the edge of the Adelaide River floodplains about 50 km southeast of Darwin. With a population of just 623, it offers an authentic outback experience far from tourist crowds. The landscape is quintessential Top End: vast savannah woodlands, termite mounds, and paperbark wetlands teeming with birdlife. During the dry season (May–October), the weather is balmy and perfect for exploring nearby Litchfield National Park or taking a crocodile cruise on the Adelaide River. Life here moves slowly; the local pub serves cold beer and hearty meals, and the night sky is dazzlingly clear. This is a place for travellers who want to disconnect, fish for barramundi, and witness stunning sunsets over the floodplains. Don't expect fine dining or luxury resorts – The Narrows is raw, unpolished, and unforgettable.

Best time to visit The Narrows

May to October (dry season) offers the most comfortable temperatures (20–32°C), lower humidity, and no rain. Wildlife viewing is best as animals gather at shrinking waterholes. November to April is the wet season with oppressive heat, daily monsoonal downpours, and many roads closed. Some travellers love the lush green landscape, but be prepared for flooding and fewer services.

Getting around

"A 4WD vehicle is essential – no public transport exists in The Narrows. The Stuart Highway connects to Darwin (45 minutes) and Katherine (2.5 hours). Roads around the settlement are unsealed. Fuel is available at a small roadside station, but fill up in Darwin. Walking is fine within the tiny town centre, but distances are great."

Scam risk

3/10

"The Narrows is very safe from violent crime, but the real dangers are environmental: extreme heat, flash floods in wet season, crocodiles in all waterways (never swim in rivers or billabongs), and venomous snakes. Always carry water, inform someone of your plans, and carry a satellite communicator as mobile coverage is patchy. Keep vehicles in good condition – breakdowns can be serious in remote areas."

Entry and health

Health information

"Remote area; nearest hospital is in Darwin (50 km). Carry a comprehensive first-aid kit and ample prescription medications. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and insect-borne diseases (Ross River virus, dengue) are risks. Use strong DEET repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk, and drink at least 3 litres of water daily. Consider a telemedicine app for advice. No local pharmacy – stock up in Darwin."

Culture

Local customs

"Locals are friendly and informal; a smile and nod go a long way. Dress is casual – shorts, t-shirts, sturdy footwear. When visiting nearby Aboriginal communities (ask permission), dress modestly and avoid photographing people without consent. Respect sacred sites and do not enter without a guide. Tipping is not expected. Swearing is less taboo but still avoid loud profanity."
