A car is highly recommended for exploring beyond Denver and Boulder, especially for mountain destinations, national parks, and scenic drives. Public transportation within cities is good, but intercity travel often requires a vehicle.

Spend a day acclimating in Denver or Colorado Springs before heading higher. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol initially, eat light meals, and consider medication like acetazolamide if prone to altitude sickness. Listen to your body and descend if symptoms worsen.

The legal age for both alcohol and recreational cannabis consumption is 21. Cannabis can only be consumed on private property; public consumption remains illegal. Driving under the influence of either substance carries severe penalties.

While encounters are rare, be aware of black bears, mountain lions, and moose in wilderness areas. Make noise while hiking, store food properly, and never approach wildlife. Rattlesnakes are found at lower elevations; watch where you step.

Layered clothing is essential due to rapidly changing mountain weather. Include sunscreen, sunglasses, sturdy hiking shoes, a reusable water bottle, and all-season gear. In winter, pack warm layers, waterproof jackets, and proper snow boots.
