Slovakia, Europe

Trnava Region is a STATE in Slovakia, Europe.

Trnava Region, the 'Little Rome' of Slovakia, offers a captivating blend of medieval charm, thermal spas, and rolling vineyards. The city of Trnava enchants with its intact 13th-century walls, Gothic and Baroque churches, and a vibrant town tower viewable from myriad cobbled lanes. Just north, Piešťany spa lures with healing mud and geothermal waters on a leafy island in the Váh River, while the Small Carpathian wine route beckons with family-run cellars pouring velvety Rieslings. Stop by romantic Smolenice Castle, hike to Dobrá Voda ruins, or explore Driny Cave’s stalactite labyrinths. Cycle along the Vážska path, taste Skalický trdelník cake, and in autumn, join the grape harvest festivities. From the sacred quiet of St. Nicholas Basilica to a sunny afternoon of wine tasting in Modra, the region packs an authentic, unhurried Slovak experience.

Getting around

"Trnava city centre is walkable. Regional trains and buses connect Trnava, Piešťany, and smaller towns efficiently and cheaply (tickets at stations or drivers). For the Small Carpathian wine route and hilltop castles, renting a car is highly recommended as bus services are sparse. Cycling paths along the Váh river are excellent. Taxis are affordable but agree on a fare or use a ride-hailing app."

"Trnava Region is one of the safest areas in Central Europe. Violent crime is exceedingly rare. Exercise usual caution with valuables in busy tourist sites and train stations to avoid pickpocketing. Hiking in the Small Carpathians is safe, but let someone know your route and check weather forecasts. Taxis at the station may overcharge—pre-book or use apps. Stay aware in quiet underpasses at night."

Entry and health

Health information

"No special vaccinations are required beyond routine immunizations; EU/EEA citizens should carry a European Health Insurance Card. Tap water is safe to drink. Ticks in forested areas can carry tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease—consider vaccination and use repellents on hikes. Medical facilities are reliable in Trnava and Piešťany; pharmacies are widely available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for remote adventures."

Local customs

"Greet with a handshake and ‘Dobrý deň’. When entering churches, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and men should remove hats. Tipping 10% in restaurants is customary unless service is included. Remove shoes when visiting a Slovak home—slippers are often provided. Punctuality is appreciated. Drinking in public is generally frowned upon. Learn a few Slovak words: ‘ďakujem’ (thank you) goes a long way."
