Uusimaa

Finland, Europe

Uusimaa is a STATE in Finland, Europe.

Uusimaa, the vibrant heart of southern Finland, is a captivating blend of Nordic cool and cosmopolitan energy. Centered around Helsinki, the design-forward capital, this coastal region offers a stunning archipelago of over 300 islands, from the fortress of Suomenlinna to the quiet coves of Porkkalanniemi. Stroll through the Art Nouveau streets of Katajanokka, immerse yourself in the innovative spirit of the Design District, and savour the steam of a traditional seaside sauna. Beyond the city, the lush Nuuksio National Park provides pristine lakes and ancient forests perfect for hiking and berry-picking. The region buzzes year-round with markets, museums, and a culinary scene that transforms from Michelin-starred restaurants to lively food halls. Whether you’re island-hopping on a summer day when the sun barely sets or embracing the cosy 'hygge' in a snow-dusted café, Uusimaa marries natural serenity with urban sophistication, creating an unforgettable Nordic escape.

Best time to visit Uusimaa

Late May through early September offers the best weather, with long, light-filled days (up to 19 hours of daylight in June) and lively outdoor terraces, festivals, and island hopping. July is warmest (occasionally reaching 25°C) but also busiest; book accommodation well in advance. For winter magic, visit in December when Helsinki’s Christmas markets glow and snowfall is common—ideal for cosy city breaks and possible Northern Lights sightings. Shoulder seasons (May and September) provide pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and colourful nature. Avoid November and March if you dislike slush and unpredictable weather.

Getting around

"The Helsinki region’s HSL public transport system is world-class, covering buses, trams, metro, commuter trains, and the Suomenlinna ferry with a single ticket (zones A–D). Buy tickets from the HSL app or R-kioski. Cycling is extremely popular; city bikes (Helsinki City Bikes) are available April–October. The Helsinki–Vantaa Airport is connected to the city centre by the I and P trains in about 30 minutes. For archipelago hopping, regular ferries serve islands like Vallisaari and Pihlajasaari. Car rental is unnecessary for city stays but useful for exploring Nuuksio National Park. Walking is delightful in the compact city core."

Scam risk

7/10

"Uusimaa is one of the safest regions in the world. Violent crime is rare. Petty theft, such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching, can occur in busy tourist areas like the Central Railway Station and Esplanadi Park, especially during summer. Exercise normal precautions with valuables. Winter brings darkness and slippery streets; use reflective gear and watch your step. The biggest natural risk is freezing temperatures and thin ice on bodies of water—never walk on sea ice unless marked safe. If you enjoy nightlife, stay aware in popular bar districts, but you’re unlikely to encounter trouble. Public transport is very safe at all hours."

Entry and health

Health information

"Finland has an excellent public healthcare system. EU/EEA citizens should carry a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for reduced-cost medical treatment; an equivalent Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) applies for UK residents. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors. No specific vaccinations are required, but you should be up-to-date on routine immunisations. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is present in coastal and archipelago areas; consider vaccination if you plan extensive outdoor activities in forests. In winter, dress warmly and be mindful of icy conditions—slip-resistant footwear is essential. Tap water is safe and of high quality. Pharmacies (apteekki) are well-stocked, with 24-hour options in Helsinki."

Culture

Local customs

"Finns value punctuality, modesty, and personal space. Greet with a firm handshake; hugs are for close friends. In homes and many older buildings, removing shoes at the door is expected. Sauna is a sacred ritual—participating nude is normal (gender-segregated); swimsuit is worn in mixed public saunas. Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated for exceptional service (5–10%). Speak quietly in public; loudness can be seen as rude. Queueing is orderly. Dress is smart-casual; in winter, layering and proper outdoor gear are essential. Recycling is taken seriously, with bins everywhere."
